Graduation Announcements Mail Soon: 5 Great Gifts for the Grad |
4:00 pm Posted by Kristy |
Graduation season looms large for millions of exhausted but excited high school and college seniors across the country. When the graduation party invitations and graduation announcements start arriving, be ready with original and useful gifts.
Consider steering away from traditional showpieces, like a fancy watch or gold-plated ball point pen. Practicality and utility hold great value these days - things a grad can put to use as soon as the party clears out and friends scatter. Here are 5 practical and useful gift ideas:
- Money. Cash is still king. But to keep cold cash from feeling…well…cold, deliver those crisp bills in anengraved money clip or security lockbox.
- Gift cards. A favorite store or restaurant are good choices if you know where the grad shops and eats. If not, give a pre-paid gas card.
- GPS navigational device. Good brands include TomTom or Garmin.
- Shares of stock. Include abook along with the stock certificatebyarespected and readable financial writer like Suzie Orman or Dave Ramsey.Check http://amzn.to/f5j76K for reviews on the latest titles and reviews.
- Themed gift basket.Have somefun and package items together with a theme. Stuff a new laundry basket with fresh towels, detergent, fabric softener and a roll of quarters. Fill a giant popcorn bowl with candy, microwave popcorn, and Netflix giftcards. Set up a new toolbox with a hammer, tape measure, picture hangers, and more.
This graduation gift list would not be complete without also mentioning that thank-you cards are a very useful gift for a grad. High quality graduation thank you notes are available at LookLoveSend.com.

Birthday Party Planning Made Easy with Online “How-to” Videos |
4:00 pm Posted by Kristy |
In a previous birthday party planning post, I shared some laughable details about being an overzealous do-it-all-myself party planning mom. Now I know better, and I really do believe in outsourcing the things I don’t need (or want) to spend time on.
My son’s sixth birthday is around the corner. I’;m getting ready with birthday party invitations from LookLoveSend.com, party favors from http://www.orientaltrading.com/, and a video that will make baking a spaceshuttle cake make me look like a rocket scientist:
Their high quality, professionally produced video web site is so helpful that I am taking a confident leap into uncharted territory: baking. This is the one nagging do-it-yourself party item that still hangs over me. I have never baked a single birthday cake. My daughter is 8, my son is 5… that’s 13 chances! I have let this slide despite the universal understanding that the birthday cake is usually the climactic moment (debatable if a pinata is involved).
So I will turn to my trusty computer foryet another great online resource–step-by-step “how-to” video for baking a cake. Lots of other great tips and ideas for your birthday party planning are available on this same website, http://www.bettycrocker.com/menus-holidays-parties/birthdays.

When I was a mom with kids in the pre-school set, I would get butterflies in my stomach several weeks ahead of their birthdays. It’s true – birthday party planning made me want to scream! At the time, I thought that coming up with a memorable, fun and original birthday party meant I had to produce everything myself.
I guess I fell victim to “motherhood in the age of anxiety” syndrome. How else to explain antics like homemade birthday party invitations - handcut, stamped, and painstakingly rhymed? Or party favors calligraphied with each guest’s name? Then there was the timeI stayed uptil 2 a.m. stuffing newspaper into plastic, orange jack-o-lantern Halloween trash bags in a quest to recreate a pumpkin patch in my backyard. I went to bed only because I ran out of newspaper.
Now that I’m older and “wiser”, I’ve learned to cut myself a little slack. Outsourcing certain things allows me to actually enjoy planning. I’ve become a big fan of a single party favor, like a beach ball or sand bucket forsummertime birthdays, or a small pumpkin or take-home craft for fall birthdays. I also leave my calligraphy pen in the drawer – kids read their names more easily when written with a big black sharpie!
Most of all, I save a great deal of time now by ordering birthday party invitations online because there are so many fun, colorful designs from which to choose. Originality and customization still count, and so I love the invitations that are available at LookLoveSend.com. They have original, beautifuldesigns for boys’ and girls’ parties, I can still make up my silly rhymes, and they’ll print on the highest quality paper. Now if I can just find some help with the cake….

A Stylish Bridal Shower Invitation for a Sophisticated Night Out |
3:29 pm Posted by Nicola |
If you are hosting a bridal shower for someone who loves a fun night out with close girlfriends, why not throw her a sophisticated cocktail party style shower that she will be sure to remember? We’ve all been to a traditional bridal shower, whether the “kitchen theme” with its kitchen-themed gifts and recipe exchanges. Or the “around the clock” theme for which each guest must match her gift with something used at that particular time of day. And while these typical theme parties lend themselves to fun activities and easy interaction between guests, they may not be the first choice of every bride-to-be.
Hosting a less traditional evening bridal shower allows guests to dress up, mingle, and watch gifts being opened in the fun atmosphere of a pre-bachelorette party. Planning for such an event can be simple and mostly done in advance, here are some tips.
- Prepare a selection of simple hors d’oeuvres ahead of time, arranged in buffet style with small plates or cocktail napkins.
- Setup a bar including non-alcoholic beverages and perhaps a signature punch for the bride-to-be.
- Play soft but modern background music
- Choose an inexpensive theme-based favor gift, such as a decorated martini glass (bought in a set but presented singly).
And how about this for the perfect bridal shower invitation for the event, it is titled “Pink and Black Damask Bride” by designer Amanda Zoss?

Reese Witherspoon wore a pink wedding gown for her recent nuptials at her California estate home. When I saw this celebrity style update while browsing entertainment news online, it made me wonder about the power of celebrity trends for what is usually a very tradition-oriented day. Nobody can deny the overwhelming public interest in celebrity styles and trends. Will Reese’s dress color choice make brides want to wear “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something PINK?” for their own upcoming nuptials?
Pink is a commonly selected color for weddings, whether for the bridesmaid dresses, table decorations, wedding invitation accents, or bouquets. Pink is undoubtedly the color of romance and particularly suited for a spring or summer wedding event.
Thinking more about the possible pink gown trend that has just been sparked, I searched some wedding gown websites and checked out the new collections.
